Botany 101
for Upper Elementary
Teachers
June 16-20, 2008
9am – 4pm daily
This course will introduce upper elementary teachers in grades 4-6
to the plant science content knowledge they will need to help their
students meet the state science standards. Teachers will study
plants and their habitats first hand thereby establishing a strong
science foundation that will make them more comfortable in teaching
these subjects. Specific topics will be taken from the Ohio
Academic Content Standards for Science in grades 4-6. Plant
structure, function, adaptations, life cycles, diversity,
reproduction and genetics will be covered.
Participants will build their own knowledge base and take part in
activities and experiments that are appropriate for their students.
A large part of the class time will be spent in outdoor field
studies to provide first-hand experiences with the science concepts
being covered. What better place to study plants than at The Holden
Arboretum
Holden will cover the cost of one graduate credit from John Carroll
University upon successful completion of the course. Teachers may
opt to pay for an additional credit on their own. Teachers will
receive activity hand-outs as well as science reference and
curriculum texts for use in their classroom. There is no fee for
this course.

Art and the Natural World
for teachers of all grade levels
July 14-18, 2008
9am – 4pm daily
This class is for art teachers, classroom teachers and those who
just want to explore their artistic side.
It is designed for all grade levels who
want to explore ways to use beauty in the natural world to inspire
their student’s and their own art. The ability to observe well is a
skill that unlocks so many doors in so many subject areas. There is
so much to discover and learn through the practice of art.
Each day participants will venture outside to learn about the
natural world through observation. They will then use this
information to inspire a piece of art they will create. Various
media will be used throughout the week. Pieces will be created
outside when possible and inside when appropriate. All techniques
will be applicable to the classroom. A large part of the class time
will be spent outdoors to provide first-hand experiences with the
subject matter being covered.
Observation is critical to good art and good science. It’s a
beautiful combination. This course will help participants establish
a strong connection between the natural world, observation,
discovery and art. It will help teachers develop creative ways to
use these subjects to integrate parts of their curriculum in new and
interesting ways. Participants will build their own knowledge base
and take part in activities and experiments that are age appropriate
for their students..
The Holden Arboretum will cover the cost of one graduate credit from
John Carroll University upon successful completion of the course.
Teachers may opt to pay for an additional credit on their own.
Teachers will receive activity hand-outs and other resources for use
in their classroom. There is no fee for this course.
