Lantern
Court at The Holden Arboretum
Lantern Court, a Georgian Colonial house built of Ohio
sandstone, is surrounded by 25 acres of informal gardens and woodlands which
include many unusual shrubs and trees. The house was built in the early 1930s
as a residence for Mr. and Mrs. Warren H. Corning. Designed by architect,
Edward Maier of the Cleveland firm Maier and Walsh, the home is located in a
beautiful country setting.
The
landscaping was planned by Mr. Corning and Donald Gray, landscape architect.
When entering the grounds, visitors can immediately enjoy the view of
magnificent perennial borders, rose and wildflower gardens, rockery, and hosta
collection. One terrace at the house overlooks a wooded ravine where a
tributary of the East Branch of the Chagrin River forms a 20-foot waterfall. A
wooden statue of St. Francis carved by artist James J. Fillous from a beam of
St. John's Cathedral in Cleveland, stands in the spring bulb hosta garden.
The
interior of this country home fulfills the Georgian promise of the impressive
exterior. On entering the home, one is greeted by a graceful curved stairway,
beautiful woodwork and lovely original furnishings. Marble in the house is from
Vermont with the exception of the Italian marble fireplace located in the
living room. Each of the second floor bedrooms has a distinct style of
decorative motifs. With the exception of the master suite, the beautifully
executed woodwork, the furnishings, and decorative arts are compatible with the
Georgian Colonial style of the house. The art deco master suite reflects the
latest in interior decoration at the time the house was built.
Furniture, rugs, and paintings represent the old and the
new. Corning family portraits and paintings by well-known Cleveland artists are
found throughout the house.
