The Garden Partner Program
This program is ideal for people who are recovering from a traumatic accident, illness or who have had reconstructive surgery such as a hip or knee replacement. It is a great way to get re-involved in the community in a supportive environment. It is also an excellent volunteer opportunity for people with developmental disabilities who make need a supported volunteer situation.
Partners in this program are also volunteers who are interested in gardening and enjoy helping people. The number of positions in the program is limited. Interviews with potential volunteers are scheduled prior to beginning work in the garden to ensure suitable accommodations can be made.
Volunteers
meet from 9:30am until noon, Thursday mornings, June through August.
Volunteers of all abilities can work as Partners in this program. Special tools and assistance is available to accommodate individual needs.
Partners work in the Display Garden and in the gardens around the Corning Visitor Center. Tasks include watering, weeding, pruning, and deadheading under the direction of Holden’s horticulture staff. Work assignments in Holden’s greenhouses take place on rainy days.
The program is a great way to learn more about gardening and techniques to make gardening easier. Volunteer opportunities with Partners can be arranged in other volunteer areas and at other times on a case-by-case basis.
