Fall Teen volunteer Opportunities

Scarecrow Row

Area organizations, clubs, businesses, classes, etc. are invited to design and create a scarecrow out of natural or recycled materials for a special display during Holden’s family friendly Halloween extravaganza, Goblins in the Garden, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6, 2013. All accepted entries will receive 10 complimentary passes ($150 value) for attendance to the event!

This would be a great (and fun!) project for a school club, class or any group of creative students. Scarecrows may be picked up after Oct. 14 - plenty of time to take it back to display at the school before Halloween!

Scarecrows Delivery/Set-up: On or Before Wednesday, Oct. 2

Goblins in the Garden

Students are invited to come out in costume and pass out candy as the characters at the stations on our themed family-friendly trick-or-treat trail. Others may serve as “floaters,” giving breaks or passing out programs to guests, or assist with a family activity such as face painting. This is a popular event and volunteer spaces fill fast so encourage your students to turn their forms in early.

Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 5 and 6

Leaf Rake Ups

Gardens need care and attention year round to make them look their best. Individuals and groups (ages 11 and up) are invited to come out and help us get the gardens ready for winter. Volunteers will help rake leaves and collect fallen twigs and branches. Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy waterproof shoes and bring a pair of warm waterproof work gloves. We’ll provide complimentary snacks and refreshments!

Scheduled weekdays and Saturdays in October and November - contact the volunteer office at 440.602.8003 or rott@holdenarb.org to inquire about possible dates for your group to come out!

Gift Wrapping

Spread some holiday cheer and wrap up your service hours at The Holden Arboretum. Creative hands are needed to wrap gifts for guests during Holden’s Gifts from the Heart of Nature craft show. Bring a friend and volunteer together!

Bird Feeders

Even though the snow has fallen, our feathered friends still need to eat. Help by keeping the bird feeders full near Buckeye Bud’s Nature Area. We need volunteers to hike out to fill the bird feeders on a weekly or bi-weekly basis. The ability to hike in snow and possibly be in freezing temperatures for up to an hour is required.
