Summer Teen Volunteer Opportunities

Junior Volunteer Program

This is a very unique opportunity for teens between the ages of 14 and 17 years old to commit to volunteering regularly at Holden for six weeks during the summer in June and July. Join us and learn new things , have fun and develop leadership skills while sharing your talents with others and the environment. Junior Volunteers will help in ways that interest them - whether it is working with plants, children, or a computer! Each student is matched with a staff supervisor who will oversee their day to day work and provide guidance as needed. Junior Volunteers will also have the opportunity to take part in other activities at Holden to experience, and meet staff from, other areas in the organization. Learn more about the program and application process.

Sign-up Deadline: Friday, March 14, 2014

Two -12 hours per week, from June 16-July 25

Gardening

Join Holden’s horticulturists once a week and assist them in maintaining the grounds. No experience necessary, just the willingness to work hard and get a little dirty. Volunteers are needed during the week to perform gardening tasks (weeding, watering, and planting) in the various gardens around Holden’s 3,600 acres. Students must want to learn a few new things and enjoy working with others.

Two to four hours per week, weekday mornings

Bluebird Monitor (with a parent or guardian)

Help with scientific research by being a bluebird monitor. For a couple of hours a week, volunteers will monitor the bluebird trail consisting of 12-20 bluebird boxes, accurately record observations, and clean nests as necessary. On-the-job training will be provided and volunteers need to be able to engage in moderate outdoor activity.

Two hours per week for at least one season (weekdays or weekends)

Volunteer Land Steward

Volunteer Land Stewards will help to promote biodiversity by helping to monitor and control non-native invasive plant species in the Holden natural area. Volunteers interested in helping must be able to engage in moderate outdoor activity. Frequency of sessions depend on chosen area.

Various time both weekdays and weekends

Two to four hours per session
