Arbor Day 2012

Arbor Day is the annual observance that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. Holden will celebrate with a weekend filled with activities, as well as a Scientist Lecture and story times for children held at regional libraries.

Celebration Activities

Opening of Holden's Summer Exhibit – Vanishing Acts: Trees Under Threat

April 27 - Oct. 28

 

This summer's special exhibit, Vanishing Acts: Trees Under Threat will open Arbor Day weekend at Holden and run through Oct. 28. Created by the Morton Arboretum in Chicago, Ill., the traveling exhibit looks at fifteen different tree species in danger of vanishing from our landscape. Visitors will follow an easy, one-mile trail through Holden’s gardens to learn more. Family activities along the way will allow parents and children to explore and learn.

 

The exhibit is included in the price of regular admission.

Great Lakes Timber ShowNew This Year – Great Lakes Timber Show

The Great Lakes Timber Show show features chainsaw carving, axe throwing, wood chopping, one and two-man crosscut sawing, modified chain sawing, log rolling and loads of fun.

 

Enjoy this fascinating display and learn more about the important role lumberjacks play in forest and tree management through selective harvesting.

 

Performances are scheduled for 10:30am, 12:30pm and 3pm

Returning This Year, Holden's Healthy Tree Exhibit

Located in the Arthur S. Holden Sr. Hedge Collection in the Display Garden, the Healthy Tree Exhibit shows homeowners how to plant and maintain happy, healthy trees. Experts will be on hand during the Arbor Day celebration to answer specific questions.

Regional Library Story Times

Holden volunteers are scheduled to visit over 30 area libraries in the month of April as Tree Tale Tellers, sharing stories and free activities related to trees, appropriate for preschoolers and children up to age 8.

10 am Tree seedling give-away:  Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii  250 trees will be given away each day. One per family.     
7-9 pm Arbor Day Lecture:  Turnover in Eastern Old-growth Forest: Natural and Novel Processes by James Runkle, PhD, a professor at Wright State University.

10am-4pm Kids tree climbing demonstrations by Red Oak Camp

Highlights Walking Tours – View plants and vistas in the gardens and natural areas while learning more about Holden's history and programs. Tour is an easy 60 minute walk.

Ohio Trees Under Threat – View six Ohio native trees threatened by past, present or future diseases and pest. Learn how to identify these trees and discover why they are valuable components of our forests and economy. Learn what researchers are doing to re-establish American chestnuts and American elms, and why you should be concerned about the future of eastern hemlock, butternut, American beech and white ash trees. Tour appropriate for adults and children over the age of 14.
