Stebbins Gulch The Slide

The algae-coated slide

Despite appearances, this may be the most challenging stretch of the entire tour from a safety standpoint.  “The Slide” or “The Spillway” is made up of a weak layer of sandstone that has eroded into a long, continuous slope, unlike the more resistant rocks downstream, which form small waterfalls or step-like cascades. The Slide is almost always completely coated in algae. There are no footholds and nothing to grab with your hands, making it imperative to step carefully and keep your eyes on the ground.
