Stop 15: Journey's End

Cooling off in Stebbins Gulch.

The kids in this image are enjoying the plunge pool below the big waterfall on a hot August day. The Berea Sandstone forms the caprock for the waterfall in the background. For a summer day, there is a fairly strong flow over the waterfall and higher than usual water in the plunge pool. A child cannot get an experience like this in a small suburban backyard or in front of a computer. The fun they are having here may plant the seed in their minds that other places like this need to be protected. We extend our sincere thanks to all the members, friends and volunteers of The Holden Arboretum, who make visits to this National Natural Landmark possible for so many people each year.
