Celebration Activities

Friday, April 24

10am Ceremonial tree planting
10am Tree seedling give-away - shadblow serviceberry, sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts.

Fridays in the Garden - Join Chad Clink, the Arboretum's community forester, to discuss the importance of sustainable urban and community forestry in creating healthy cities. The history of Arbor Day provides us with a case study and a call to action- what are we doing to continue the rich legacy of trees in communities? Join us for the ceremonial tree planting at 10am

7-9 pm

Arbor Day Lecture: The Evolution of Big, featuring guest speaker William (Ned) Friedman, director of the Arnold Arboretum at Harvard University and Arnold Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University.

Friedman reveals an amazing period when there were no trees, and then, in the blink of a geological eye, several different groups of plants evolved the ability to increase their girth. Get a sense of what forests looked like three hundred million years ago. Learn about the extinction of all but one of the early arborescent lineages of plants and find out which evolutionary group of trees survived to populate arboreta and today’s forests.

The lecture is free, but please register.
