Family Hike to Stebbins Gulch

Description

Do you like cold streams, waterfalls, walls of towering rock and crayfish? If so, Stebbins Gulch is the perfect place to explore if you don't mind getting wet and dirty. Join us as we travel back in time and into the stream. We'll search for crayfish, climb a waterfall and locate rock layers from earlier times. You might even find a fossil or stone carving. Bring a sense of adventure, waterproof boots and a change of clothes. Each family member must be able to walk up steep hills and hike for two miles often in the creek and around large rocks.

Tree Tales

Description

Toddlers, preschoolers and their parents are invited to begin their day at Holden in the Corning Library with tree stories, songs and activities facilitated by our Tree Tale Tellers. Afterwards, enjoy the new Kids Corner in the remodeled Corning Library and then spend some fun family time in our gardens, along our hiking trails or at Buckeye Bud's Adventure Woods.

Have You Seen Trees? A Leaf Walk for the Littlest Tree Lovers

Description

Join us as we read the wonderful book Have You Seen Trees? by Joanne Oppenheim. We will hunt down the trees in this beautiful poem and make our own wonderful leaf collection to take home.

Fish with Officer Piotrowski - Members Only

Description Meet Holden Police Officer Piotrowski who will teach you how to fish safely with your child. Families discover the most common fish to be found in local ponds and learn about other fish habitats and what fish need to healthfully survive in the wild. Participants will then carpool to a nearby pond where proper fishing rod use and set-up will be demonstrated. Ample time will be available for fishing. Each child will receive a police badge sticker. Dress for the weather and bring a snack and drink and fishing rod. Space is limited so register early.

Autumn Leaves and S'mores: A Fall Picnic

Description

There is no better way to spend a fall evening than listening to the crunch of leaves underfoot as you walk through the woods, collecting colorful examples and perhaps catching a glimpse of the few remaining frogs in the pond. Join us for a fall picnic. We will provide the s'mores, the leaf trail and the craft activities. The activities will be ongoing so you can collect, hike, eat and make things in whatever order you want. All you need to bring is your curiosity and picnic dinner.

Spectacular Seed Mosaics

Description

Did you know that seeds make beautiful art? Use a combination of pre-collected seeds and seeds gathered on your own to crate an artistic image from nature. Using chalk and illustration board participants will draw an image then use a beautiful and diverse array of seeds to make their image come to life.  We might even snack on some seeds while we work.

Fall Family Hike to Little Mountain

Description Do you like gigantic boulders with crevices, cracks and pools of water? Little Mountain is the perfect place to explore if you don’t mind getting wet and dirty. Join us as we locate sites of old hotels, find names carved into rocks more than 100 years ago and search for the old spring house. Bring a sense of adventure and boots. Each family member must be able to walk up steep hills and and hike for two miles. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate foot gear for some wet walking. Children age 8 and above.
