Gentle Chair Yoga with a Garden View

Description

Chair yoga adapts traditional yoga poses so that they can be done with a chair for support making yoga accessible for everyone. Learn breathing and relaxation techniques, increase your flexibility and strength, improve your balance and circulation. Your body and mind are really going to appreciate this class. All are welcome. A great program for seniors. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.

Potluck with Your Pooch

Description

Enjoy an early evening hike with your dog to look at fall foliage. We will finish with a potluck dinner in the shelter house and a warm fire. Please bring a dish to share. Hot beverages provided. This is a moderate to rugged hike.

Wine and Cheese Night Hike

This is a rain or shine event so dress for the weather and wear appropriate hiking shoes. These hikes fill quickly – prompt registration is suggested. Adults only.

Hiking Holden Habitats: Me and My Dog

Description

Bring your dog and enjoy an informal nature program along Holden’s garden and woodland trails.  These casual hikes allow you to get some exercise with your four-legged friend while learning more about how the trees, plants and animals prepare for the winter. This is an easy to moderate hike.  Registration required

Special Rules Dogs must be leashed and well-mannered
Disruptive dogs will be asked to continue the hike separate from the group
Dog waste must be picked up and disposed of properly, bags provided.

Paint with Your Camera

Description This workshop will teach you how to use your camera to create impressionistic-like images. Classroom instruction will take place the first hour and then we will head out to the Arlene and Arthur S. Holden Jr. Butterfly Garden and surrounding woodlands and garden areas to take advantage of the fall evening light and to practice newly learned techniques   We will meet again on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 7 - 9pm to share our images and for an instructor critique. This workshop is for intermediate or advanced digital photographers who have a good understanding of how to use their cameras. Dress for the weather of the day and bring a bag dinner to eat before heading outside.

Drawing Series: Observing Light on Natural Form

Description

Using charcoal and various pencils, including colored conte pencil, structure your drawings and strengthen composition while observing the natural beauty of The Holden Arboretum. During a brief instructional session at the beginning of each class students will be encouraged to see light as contrasting shape while adding structure and detail with line, tone and color. Practice, expression and technique are equally encouraged. Beginners, advanced students and high school students needing observation work for college admission are all welcome. Please bring a drawing board, masking tape, one pad of smooth Bristol paper, one box of extra soft vine charcoal, one kneaded eraser and one french stump to Session 1. One pad of colored pastel paper and one set of Conte colored pastel pencils are needed for Session 2. A portable stool and easel is recommended as students will be outside, weather permitting. The first workshop on Oct. 6 will explore observation drawing in monochrome. The second workshop will explore observation drawing in color; including using conte sticks and pencils.

Waterfalls and Woodlands Photo Tour

Description

Join Ian Adams, author of A Photographer’s Guide to Ohio, for a one-day photo tour of some of the most beautiful waterfalls, fall color hotspots and scenic vistas in the eastern suburbs of Cleveland. We’ll enjoy a spectacular view from Tinker’s Creek overlooking Bedford Reservation, as well as nearby Bridal Veil Falls and Big Falls of Tinker’s Creek. We’ll visit Mill Creek Falls, one of Ohio’s largest waterfalls, only five miles as the crow flies from downtown Cleveland, and enjoy the peak of fall color as we travel along Cleveland’s

famed Emerald Necklace to enjoy more views and waterfalls along the Chagrin River. Adams will provide tips and one-on-one coaching to help you improve your waterfall and fall color photographs, and we will reconvene at The Holden Arboretum on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 2-5pm for a review/critique of your best images taken on the photo tour and learn about some Photoshop techniques for fine-tuning your digital landscape photographs. Participants should have a basic knowledge of digital photography and be familiar with the controls on their

digital camera (s). Directions to meeting site will be sent upon registration.

Celebrate Fall Colors in Silk

Description

Capture the beauty of fall foliage and nature's other colors in shimmering hand-painted silk using a resist method and water-based dyes that flow like watercolor. Release your inner artist as you create two painted silks, either 12" x 60" or 26" square, while learning brush control, color mixing, shading and a bit of history. Advanced students can make one large silk. No experience necessary. Bring a brown bag lunch.
