Description

Where do toys, books, tables and maple syrup come from? These great things come from trees. Come learn why we should be thankful for trees. We will learn about all kinds of things we use everyday that come from trees. We will then take a walk outside to visit some of the trees that are used for making these things. We will make a take home a souvenir from a tree and end on a sweet note provided by a Sugar maple. Dress for walking outside.

Family Hike to Little Mountain

Description Little Mountain is the perfect place to explore if you don't mind getting wet and dirty. Travel through narrow passageways and around gigantic boulders as we search for clues of a time gone by, including the old spring house, and discover names carved into rocks more than 100 years ago. Each family member must be able to walk up steep hills and hike for two miles. Please dress for the weather and wear appropriate foot gear for some wet walking.

What's In That Puddle?

Description

Can you believe that there are animals that live in a puddle?  Frogs, salamanders and little insect larva can be found in the vernal pools of Holden’s forests.  We’ll explore these soggy spots with dip nets and take our findings to a microscope for a closer look.  It will be wet and muddy out there, so dress for the weather and wear appropriate foot gear.

Composting with Worms

Description

Your family can turn leftover food scraps into nutrient rich soil with the help of some hungry red wiggler worms.  Each family will construct their own worm bin to take home and get it started with real worms!  With some easy maintenance, your bin will never have unpleasant odors or unwanted pests.  We’ll also read Diary of a Worm and take a trip outside to find out how our composting worms are different than the worms in the forest.  Registration deadline is one week before the date of the class.

Family Hike to Stebbins Gulch

Description Join us as we travel back in time and into the stream as we explore Stebbins Gulch. We'll search for crayfish, climb a waterfall and locate rock layers from earlier times. You might even find a fossil or stone carving. Bring a sense of adventure, waterproof boots and a change of clothes. Each family member must be able to walk up steep hills and hike for two miles, often times in the creek. Please dress for the weather and wear foot gear with good tread for some wet/slippery walking.
