Horticulturist III

The Holden Arboretum has an opportunity for an experienced Horticulturist to take responsibility for one of our four themed gardens. Holden is one of the largest natural arboreta in the United States. Established in 1931 on 100 acres of land, Holden manages more 3,600 acres in Lake and Geauga counties, with 3,000 acres of natural areas and 600 acres of horticultural collections and displays, registering more than 16,000 plants and more than 2,100 species.

 

The Horticulturist will use sound horticultural principles to create sustainable landscapes and ensure plants are grown and cared for under optimal conditions to support their hardiness and longevity; participate in short and long range planning activities guided by Holden’s strategic objectives; and assist in the setting of goals to accomplish those objectives. In addition, this person will take initiative for record-keeping; developing improvements for themed gardens that maintain their design integrity; planning and scheduling garden tasks; leading and instructing seasonal workers and volunteers; leading garden tours; and performing other tasks as may be required.

 

Candidates must have a minimum of five (5) years experience in garden management and/or professional horticulture utilizing sustainable techniques, and be able to identify and treat pests and plant diseases. A strong knowledge of woody and herbaceous plants with an emphasis on regionally native plants and shade gardens is expected. A bachelor’s degree in horticulture, botany or similar degree is preferred and a valid driver’s license with an approved driving record is required.

Horticulture Workers/Gardeners - Seasonal

Workers to perform hands-on work in our gardens and natural areas. We plan to begin staffing these positions in April and May for a period of four(4) to six (6) months depending on the growing season and project needs. Three (3) month assignments are also available during summer months.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to planting and maintaining a variety of woody and herbaceous plants;, pruning, deadheading, weeding, mulching, planting, transplanting, dividing perennials, watering, fertilizing, hauling brush, mowing, raking, pest control, installing and removing deer fencing and the use of deer repellent; and the use of herbicides to control invasive plants.

 

Working conditions:

  1. Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  2. Work in and around poison ivy and poison sumac, shallow water, mud and brush
  3. Work around stinging insects

Requirements of the position include:

  1. Experienced gardeners preferred
  2. Experienced equipment operators for tractor and fine turf mowing and string line trimming preferred
  3. Use of hand pruners, loppers, hand saws and backpack sprayers
  4. Application of herbicides and deer repellent
  5. Able to work independently and within small work teams
  6. Good interpersonal skills
  7. Attention to detail
  8. Operation and routine maintenance of power equipment
  9. Valid driver’s license

Conservation Workers – Seasonal

Assist in finding invasive plants and using mechanical or chemical methods to remove them from our natural areas . The season typically runs from May into October, but shorter work periods may be arranged.

 

In addition to plant control, responsibilities include but are not limited to collecting detailed information on plant populations and site conditions; electronic mapping using GPS and GIS technology; data entry and record keeping; equipment maintenance; trail maintenance; and other projects as needed.

 

Working conditions:

  1. Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  2. Work in and around poison ivy and poison sumac, shallow water, mud and brush
  3. Work around stinging insects

Requirements of the position include:

  1. Application of herbicides
  2. Use of a compass, read maps, identify plants, and take detailed field notes
  3. Use of hand pruners, loppers, hand saws, backpack sprayers and other application equipment
  4. Knowledge of GPS, GIS and MS Access would be helpful; training provided
  5. Good Interpersonal skills
  6. Able to work independently or within small work teams with minimal supervision
  7. Attention to detail
  8. Safe operation and routine maintenance of mowing equipment and power brush-cutters
  9. Valid driver’s license

Public Programs Assistant – Seasonal

One position available for a Public Programs Assistant for the period April through September 2010.

 

The Public Program Assistant supports Holden’s education program by assisting with the implementation of weekend programming, teaching classes, conducting school and adult tours, and other activities as required.

 

Applicants must have:

  1. A minimum of an associate’s degree in natural sciences and/or education 
  2. Experience teaching diverse audiences with an emphasis on family group populations
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  4. Experience in a Windows environment using business application software including Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher

Experience with public program development in a museum and/or public garden setting is preferred. 

Essential Functions

  1. Work outdoors where the ambient temperature spans 0 - 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Transport oneself by foot over a variety of terrain that may be wet, slippery, uneven or rocky
  3. Standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, pulling, pushing, sitting, grabbing, and lifting and carrying up to 40 pounds.
  4. Highly skilled at speaking, writing and understanding the English language.
  5. Independent decision making
  6. Work independently as well as on a team

Part-time Guest Relations Representative - Seasonal

Assist in delivering outstanding customer service to our members and guests during our busy season.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Special event set-up and tear-down (tents, tables, chairs, equipment and trash removal).
  2. Promoting membership and providing information on featured and upcoming attractions, classes, activities, and seasonal programming.
  3. General housekeeping such as cleaning windows, floors and restrooms, trash removal.

Working Conditions: Work indoors and out in a variety of weather conditions where there may be extreme variations in temperature, and the weather ranges from clear and sunny to windy and rainy.

 

Requirements of the position include:

  1. Performing strenuous physical activities when necessary for event set-up and tear down.
  2. Strong customer service skills and experience working with the general public.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Computer experience in a Windows environment using Word and Excel
  5. Effectively solving medium to complex problems and managing multiple tasks.
  6. Working independently as part of a team.
  7. A valid driver’s license with less than 4 points

Guest Relations - Rental Event Staff - Seasonal

Assist the Private Event Facilities Coordinator with all private rental event activities during our busy season. The ability to work days and evenings, Friday through Sunday is a must.

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Special event set up and tear down (tents, tables, chairs, equipment and trash removal)
  2. Performing general housekeeping activities and maintaining the general cleanliness of facilities before, during and after events
  3. Being the first point of contact for the rental client 
  4. Serving as Holden’s representative/liaison for catering and other vendor needs while events are taking place
  5. Providing prompt and courteous customer service
  6. Ensuring that private rental guests do not interfere with general guest activities at Holden
  7. Bartending duties may be assigned on an as-needed basis 

Working conditions: Work indoors and out in a variety of weather conditions where there may be extreme variations in temperature, and the weather ranges from clear and sunny to windy and rainy.

 

Requirements:

  1. Work days and evenings, Friday through Sunday
