A Look Back on the Sherwick Tree Steward Events of 2018
It has been a full year for the participants in the Sherwick Tree Steward Training program. Because 2018 gives us so much to talk about, this post will focus on the training and planting done throughout the 2018 growing season.
Rewind to April, which was packed with Tree Steward events! The spring’s first Tree Steward Training was held on April 11 and 12 at the Famicos Foundation in the Glenville Neighborhood. Many volunteers showed up to the “Reforesting Slavic Village” event, where 20 trees were planted on April 21 at the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland.

In celebration of Arbor Day, on April 27, another 20 trees were planted at Franklin D. Roosevelt Academy and the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District property directly across from the school. It was a great way to celebrate Arbor Day, with students and teachers from the school joining Holden Forests & Garden’s Tree Corps program staff and representatives from Western Reserve Land Conservancy and the sewer district to add new trees to the neighborhood.

In the month of May, three events lead to the planting of an incredible 81 trees! May 12 was a large community event, organized by Linda Schnell, a Tree Steward graduate from the North Collinwood neighborhood. Linda led a neighborhood tree distribution based out of the East Park Beach Club, coordinating the planting of 50 trees on private property.

The second event was at Citizen’s Academy East & Citizen’s Leadership Academy East, where 25 trees were planted on May 18. The third event was at Magnificat High School in Rocky River on May 19 where six trees were planted, and others on the grounds were provided some upkeep maintenance.

After a summer of meetings, planning, and plenty of other tree-related activities, it came time for our autumn Sherwick Tree Steward Trainings. The first was a partnership between the Sherwick Tree Steward Program (Holden Forests & Gardens and the Western Reserve Land Conservancy), the Cleveland Museum of Natural History (CMNH), the Famicos Foundation, and EnviroScience Inc. We held a Tree Steward Training at the CMNH on Oct. 3 and 4 and planted five trees in Glenville neighborhood’s Circle North Park the following Saturday.

A second training on the 10 and 11 combined remote instruction fora group of Tree Stewards from the Downtown Youngstown Partnership with an in-person planting on Saturday, Oct. 13 of 18 eastern redbuds. The final fall training was held at St. Martin De Porres on Oct. 17 and 18, with a planting of 15 trees on the school grounds the following Saturday.

Believe it or not, there were many other planting events that there wasn’t room for in this blog, and equally surprising, for most of these events, the weather was in our favor!
There is one Sherwick Tree Steward Training scheduled in the Bellaire-Puritas Neighborhood for Spring 2019. After that, a new iteration of the program will be developed in order to secure the necessary grant funding. You can stay up to date with future Sherwick Tree Steward Training offerings here.
